2008 Hurricanes
In September of 2008, Hurricanes Hanna and Ike swept through the Turks and Caicos Islands leaving a path of destruction behind. Fortunately, no lives were lost and serious injury was avoided. However, in the wake of the hurricanes, Salt Cay suffered significant damage to its infrastructure with loss of power and communication lines. A significant number of homes, public buildings and historic sites were severely damaged and in need of urgent repair.
However, the tight knit community of Salt Cay residents pulled together as a team and with the support of generous individuals, organizations and companies were, within a few weeks, able to restore some normalcy to the island. Salt Cay Devco alone donated nearly $400,000. Immediate emergency relief supplies in the form of food, generators, tools, satellite phones and medical supplies were provided along with labour and materials to rebuild the roofs of over 30 full time residences. Salt Cay Devco also matched funds donated by many generous people to the Hurricane Relief Trust Fund which significantly contributed to further repair the interior of many homes. Due to these financial contributions and the wonderful collaborative effort by the community, Salt Cay was the first island to get back on its feet.
